Split sits on the Dalmatian coast in the heart of one of Europe's most beautiful stretches of coastline. The Roman Emperor Diocletian's 4th-century retirement palace forms the city's living, breathing center — a unique blend of ancient ruins and bustling Mediterranean life. The Adriatic climate means mild winters and hot, dry summers.
May-June and September are the ideal months. In May, the sea reaches 20C (swimmable for many), the Riva waterfront promenade fills with cafe-goers, and the ferry connections to Hvar, Brac, Vis, and Korcula run frequently. September offers the warmest sea temperatures (24C) with half the summer crowds — locals say it's the best month of the year.
Split is also the gateway to Croatia's islands, and timing matters for these. The most frequent ferry services run June-September, with July-August seeing the most departures. Hvar's lavender fields bloom in June-July, Brac's Zlatni Rat beach is most photogenic in calm summer conditions, and Vis — Croatia's most remote inhabited island — is best in September when the summer party crowd has left.
May to October. Sea temperature ranges from 19C (May) to 25C (August), remaining 23C in September. Most people find it comfortable from June onward.
July-August sees very heavy cruise ship traffic and the narrow streets of Diocletian's Palace get congested. Visit the Palace early morning or evening, and escape to the islands or Marjan Hill during peak hours.
Year-round to major islands (Hvar, Brac, Vis), but with much-reduced schedules November-March. June-September has the most frequent services. Jadrolinija and Krilo catamaran services are the main operators.
From late November through early January, Diocletian's Palace hosts Christmas markets, concerts, and festive decorations. The atmospheric setting — fairy lights in ancient Roman walls — creates a unique holiday experience at a fraction of Dubrovnik or Zagreb prices.
