Porto has a split personality weather-wise. Winter months from November through March are genuinely wet — this is one of Europe's rainiest cities, with 155-165mm of monthly rainfall in the peak. But from June through September, the rain all but stops and the city transforms into a sun-drenched playground of azulejo-tiled streets, riverside terraces, and Atlantic beaches.
The best time for most visitors is June, specifically around the Festa de Sao Joao on June 23-24. Porto's patron saint festival turns the entire city into an open-air party — locals hit each other with plastic hammers, launch sky lanterns from the Ribeira, and the Dom Luis I Bridge becomes the backdrop for a massive fireworks display. Prices spike for that specific weekend but the experience is unforgettable.
September is the connoisseur's choice. The summer crowds thin, temperatures stay around 25C, and the Douro Valley grape harvest is in full swing — you can join picking tours at quintas along the river and taste the year's new wines. The Atlantic is still warm enough for swimming at Matosinhos beach.
