Florence sits in the Arno valley, surrounded by Tuscan hills — a location that creates a microclimate noticeably hotter than coastal Italian cities in summer. July and August can be punishing, with temperatures regularly exceeding 32C and the city's stone streets radiating heat. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable for exploring.
May and September are the ideal months. In May, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino fills the city with music, the Iris Garden (above Piazzale Michelangelo) blooms with 2,500 varieties, and temperatures are perfect for walking the Renaissance streets. September brings the grape harvest, cooler evenings, and that golden Tuscan light that inspired the Renaissance painters.
Florence is one of the most-visited cities in Italy, and overtourism is a genuine issue from April to October. The Uffizi and Accademia (home of David) require advance tickets year-round but especially in peak season. Winter visitors will find that the art is unchanged, the queues are gone, and the city's trattorias serve hearty Tuscan fare — ribollita, bistecca alla fiorentina, and local Chianti — in a much more relaxed atmosphere.
July-August is genuinely uncomfortable — 32C+ with humidity trapped in the valley. If visiting in summer, sightsee in the morning, retreat to museums or gelaterias midday, and emerge for the cooler evening.
Always book in advance, regardless of season. In peak months (April-October), book 2-4 weeks ahead. In winter, a few days' notice usually suffices. Early morning slots (8:15 AM) are best for crowd avoidance.
