Cost per 100 km is an approximate average for passenger cars. Actual toll costs depend on the specific route, vehicle class and time of travel. Vignette costs are amortized over typical tourist trip lengths. Bridge and tunnel tolls are excluded from per-km averages where noted.
France and Spain have the most expensive distance-based toll systems in Europe, costing around €9-10 per 100 km on motorways. Italy and Norway are close behind at €8-8.50 per 100 km. For budget-conscious road trippers, countries with vignette systems — Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Switzerland — offer predictable flat-rate access to the entire motorway network.
Several countries have no tolls for passenger cars at all. Germany, Finland, Albania and Sweden (outside congestion zones) are all toll-free for car drivers. Denmark only charges for its major bridges. The Netherlands and Belgium have minimal tolls limited to a single tunnel each.

France has the highest per-km toll cost at approximately €10 per 100 km on autoroutes. Spain (€9/100 km), Italy (€8.50/100 km) and Norway (€8/100 km) are also expensive.
Most countries accept credit cards, but there are exceptions. Turkey requires an electronic HGS/OGS transponder with no cash option. Portugal has electronic-only toll roads. Always check payment methods before your trip.
