Faro is the capital of Portugal's Algarve region and one of Europe's busiest car rental airports. The Algarve coastline, with its golden cliffs, hidden coves, and whitewashed fishing villages, is perfectly suited to exploration by car. From the dramatic western coast at Sagres to the peaceful eastern lagoons of Tavira, a rental car reveals the full diversity of this sun-drenched region.
Faro Airport (FAO) is located 4 km west of the city centre. The rental car area is extensive, with a dedicated building housing all major companies and numerous Portuguese and budget operators. Guerin, Rodavante, and Turisprime are reputable local options that often undercut international brands.
The Algarve is one of Europe's most affordable car rental markets, with economy cars available from €8-€15 per day in the shoulder season. Even peak summer (July-August) rarely exceeds €25-€35 per day. As with Alicante, scrutinize the insurance terms and excess levels from budget operators.
The A22 toll motorway is the fastest way to traverse the Algarve but uses a confusing electronic toll system with no physical barriers. Key information:
The Algarve has over 300 days of sunshine per year. April-June is perfect: warm, uncrowded, wildflowers bloom along the cliff paths, and the sea is warming up. September-October offers the warmest sea temperatures and thinning crowds. July-August brings temperatures above 35°C and packed beaches. Winter (November-March) is mild and green, ideal for golf, hiking, and birdwatching, with the cheapest rental rates.
Driving in the Algarve is straightforward and relaxing. Roads are well-maintained and signposted. The main A22 motorway allows 120 km/h, while smaller coastal roads are typically 50-90 km/h. Portuguese drivers are generally courteous, though overtaking on blind bends on the EN125 is common. Speed cameras operate on the A22 and main national roads.
Fuel costs approximately €1.55-€1.75 per litre, slightly cheaper than Spain. Pingo Doce and Intermarché supermarket stations offer the best prices. Many smaller stations close on Sundays.
Three drives not to miss:
Parking in the Algarve is generally easier than in most European destinations. Many beach car parks are free, though the most popular (Praia da Marinha, Benagil) have small paid lots that fill early in summer. In towns like Lagos and Tavira, free parking exists within walking distance of the centre. Faro itself has ample affordable parking. The main challenge is beach parking in July-August — arrive before 10:00 AM or after 16:00 PM.
You can pick up a rental car at these airports near Faro:
| Zone | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cidade Velha (Old Town) | €0.60-€0.80/hr | Limited metered parking around the cathedral and marina. Some streets pedestrianized. |
| Central Faro | €0.40-€0.60/hr | Blue zone metered parking throughout the city. Enforced Mon-Fri 9:00-19:00, Sat 9:00-13:00. |
| Free Street Parking | Free | Available in residential areas outside the centre. Abundant in the Algarve compared to other European destinations. |
| Airport Parking | €6-€12/day | Short-stay and long-stay options. Very affordable. Walking distance to terminal. |
Traffic note: Faro and the Algarve have excellent road infrastructure thanks to EU funding. The A22 (Via do Infante) toll motorway runs the full length of the Algarve coast from the Spanish border to Lagos. The parallel EN125 national road is free but slow, congested, and has a poor safety record. Traffic builds up significantly in July-August, especially on Saturday changeover days when tourists arrive and depart simultaneously. Roundabouts are everywhere — Portuguese drivers generally use them correctly. Parking at popular beaches fills early in summer. Police speed checks are common on the A22.
Book your Faro rental online at least 2 weeks ahead — airport desk walk-up prices are typically 30-50% higher.
