The SS163 Amalfitana is one of the world's most famous drives. Carved into cliffs hundreds of meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea, it offers breathtaking views at every turn — literally, as the road consists of continuous hairpin bends barely wide enough for two cars. In peak summer, traffic grinds to a standstill, and some towns like Positano are nearly impossible to park in. Visit in May, early June, or September-October for the best experience. Beyond the Amalfi Coast, a car from Naples opens up extraordinary options. Pompeii and Herculaneum are easy half-day trips via the A3 motorway. The Cilento Coast south of Salerno is the Amalfi Coast without the crowds. Caserta, with its enormous Bourbon palace (the "Versailles of Italy"), is just 35 minutes north. And the wild mountains of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento offer remote villages and pristine landscapes that most tourists never see.
Italian motorways (autostrade) charge tolls — budget €5-€15 for typical day trips from Naples. Fuel costs €1.80-€2.00 per liter. Traffic note: Naples is legendary for its chaotic driving. Traffic rules are treated as suggestions by many locals — lane markings are largely ignored, scooters weave through traffic from every direction, and double-parking is endemic. The ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) covers most of the historic center and is enforced by cameras. The tangenziale (ring road) connecting the airport to the city is often congested. One-way streets change without warning, and GPS navigation frequently fails in narrow vicoli (alleys). Driving in Naples requires constant alertness and thick skin. Consider parking outside the center and using the metro.
