Thessaloniki, Greece's vibrant second city, is the ideal starting point for exploring northern Greece by car. From the turquoise beaches of Halkidiki to the monasteries of Meteora and the archaeological treasures of ancient Macedonia, a rental car reveals a side of Greece most tourists never see.
Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia (SKG) is located 15 km southeast of the city centre. Rental car counters are in the arrivals hall, with car parks adjacent to the terminal. Both international chains and competitive local Greek companies like Autocandia and Avance operate here.
Rental rates in Greece are very competitive, with economy cars available from โฌ15-โฌ25 per day outside peak season. July-August prices can double. Manual transmission is standard; automatic costs โฌ5-โฌ10 more per day.
The Egnatia Odos motorway, Greece's main east-west highway connecting Thessaloniki to Ioannina and the Albanian border, is tolled. Details:
May-June and September-October are perfect. Late spring offers warm but not scorching temperatures, wildflowers on hillsides, and uncrowded beaches. Autumn brings grape and olive harvests, comfortable driving conditions, and the sea is still warm for swimming into October. July-August sees temperatures above 35ยฐC and Halkidiki is packed. Winter is mild compared to northern Europe but mountain roads may need chains.
Greek driving requires confidence and patience. Road rules exist but are loosely observed. Drivers frequently use the hard shoulder to let faster traffic pass on two-lane roads โ this is expected and even considered polite. Speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on national roads, and 50 km/h in towns, but enforcement is sporadic. Greek roads have improved significantly, though mountain roads in Epirus and western Macedonia remain winding and narrow.
Fuel costs around โฌ1.70-โฌ1.90 per litre, with prices higher on islands and in remote mountain areas. Full-service stations where an attendant pumps your fuel are still common. Tipping the attendant โฌ0.50-โฌ1.00 is customary.
Greek rental companies typically have a standard excess of โฌ500-โฌ1,200 and a credit card hold of โฌ500-โฌ1,000. Some local companies accept debit cards. Full coverage insurance from the rental counter costs โฌ10-โฌ18 per day. Third-party policies are a better value at โฌ4-โฌ7 per day. Check that your policy covers underside and tyre damage, as rough rural roads can cause issues. Also verify that gravel damage is covered if you plan to explore off the main highways.
Parking in Thessaloniki is challenging but not impossible. The waterfront area is the most difficult. Your best bet is a private garage โ they are inexpensive by European standards. Alternatively, park in the eastern suburbs near the concert hall (Megaro Mousikis) and walk or take a bus along the waterfront. Street parking enforcement is inconsistent, but illegally parked cars can be towed, which is an expensive and time-consuming process to resolve with a rental car.

Traffic note: Thessaloniki traffic is notoriously chaotic. Double-parking is endemic, and motorcycles weave constantly through traffic. The city has no metro system (one is under construction), so road congestion is significant during rush hours (7:30-10:00, 14:00-15:30, 17:00-20:00). Note the unusual Greek afternoon rush around 14:00-15:30 when offices close for siesta. The inner ring road (Egnatia Street) is perpetually congested. Parking on pavements is common but technically illegal. Greek drivers use their horn frequently and may ignore lane markings. Traffic lights are sometimes treated as advisory, especially late at night.
