Munich is the ultimate launchpad for exploring the Alps, Austria, and the romantic countryside of Bavaria. With the German autobahn network radiating in all directions and some of Europe's most scenic mountain roads within easy reach, renting a car here opens up extraordinary possibilities.
Munich Airport (MUC) is located 28 km northeast of the city center and is Germany's second-busiest airport. The rental car center (Mietwagenzentrum) is a dedicated building accessible via free shuttle bus from both terminals. It houses all major and many local rental companies under one roof, making comparison and pickup straightforward. The drive from the airport to central Munich takes 35-45 minutes via the A92 and A9.
Munich rental rates are moderately priced for Western Europe, with compact cars starting from €25-€40 per day. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes are common in German rental fleets, often available as upgrades at reasonable premiums. If you plan to drive into Austria, Switzerland, or Italy, inform the rental company at booking, as cross-border driving may require additional documentation or insurance.
Munich's Umweltzone (environmental zone) requires all vehicles to display a green emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) on the windshield. Key facts:
The German autobahn around Munich offers some of the best driving in Europe. While certain sections have no speed limit (Richtgeschwindigkeit of 130 km/h is recommended but not mandatory), there are essential rules to follow:
Many of Munich's best day trips cross the Austrian border. To drive on Austrian motorways, you need a Vignette (toll sticker). A 10-day digital vignette costs €9.90 and can be purchased online at asfinag.at. Physical vignettes are available at gas stations near the border. Driving on Austrian motorways without a vignette results in a €120 fine on the spot.
Bavaria is magnificent year-round. May-June brings lush Alpine meadows, wildflowers, and long days ideal for mountain driving. September-October is Oktoberfest season and the start of autumn foliage in the Alps, though Munich hotels are extremely expensive during the festival. Winter (December-March) offers the chance to combine driving with skiing in nearby resorts like Garmisch, though winter tires are mandatory and some Alpine passes close. The Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) from Wurzburg to Fussen is best driven in late spring or early autumn.
German rental insurance is straightforward, with a typical excess of €800-€1,000 for standard categories. Deposits are usually €500-€1,000. Unlike some Southern European countries, upselling pressure at the counter tends to be moderate. German rental cars are impeccably maintained. Fuel costs around €1.65-€1.85 per liter, with autobahn stations being the most expensive. Supermarket stations and independent operators in towns offer the best prices.
You can pick up a rental car at these airports near Munich:

Traffic note: Munich has an Umweltzone (environmental zone) covering the area within the Mittlerer Ring. All vehicles require a green Umweltplakette (emissions sticker) to enter. Rental cars normally come with one already affixed to the windshield, but verify at pickup. The Mittlerer Ring itself is heavily congested during rush hours (7:30-9:30, 16:30-18:30). The Altstadtring around the old town has very limited access. German autobahns around Munich, particularly the A8 (toward Salzburg) and A9 (toward Nuremberg), have sections with no speed limit, but many stretches near the city are limited to 80-120 km/h. Winter tires are mandatory from October to Easter when conditions require them.
